Rental Requirements
What you need to know before picking up your vehicle. ID, license, and documentation requirements made simple.

Every renter must present the following documents at pickup, regardless of where you are from.
Valid Payment Card
A valid payment card in the renter’s name, used for rental charges and any security deposit that applies to your booking. Debit works too — Visa Debit over the phone with a staff member or in person, other debit cards in person at the office — and always with a security deposit.
Government-Issued ID
A valid government-issued photo identification document such as a driver's licence. Must be valid for the entire rental period.
Passport (Foreign Visitors)
Foreign visitors must present a valid passport alongside their driver’s licence. Canadian renters don’t need one.
Minimum driver age: 21
Every driver has to be 21 or over on the day you pick up — we go by the pick-up date, not today. One exception: 19–20 with ICBC coverage that extends to the rental, by arrangement — call us. Nobody under 19, and no young-driver fees. Every driver who will be behind the wheel has to meet this and be named on the rental contract.
Requirements by Renter Type
BC Residents
BC residents must present the following documents at pickup. Basic ICBC Autoplan does not automatically cover rentals — bring proof of RoadStar/RoadStar Plus or other rental coverage, or add our Standard or Enhanced damage waiver.
- Valid credit or debit card in the renter's name — debit under our debit rules
- Valid government-issued photo ID (e.g. BC driver's licence, Class 5 or higher)
Canadian Residents (Outside BC)
Canadian residents from outside British Columbia must present the same core documents. If you plan to rely on your own auto insurance coverage, bring proof of insurance as well.
- Valid credit or debit card in the renter's name — debit under our debit rules
- Valid government-issued photo ID (e.g. provincial driver's licence)
- Proof of auto insurance (if using personal coverage)
Foreign Guests
International visitors must present the same core documents. Please ensure all documentation is prepared before you travel.
- Valid credit or debit card in the renter's name — a licence from outside Canada always means a security deposit, and we don’t take cash
- Valid government-issued photo ID (e.g. driver's licence from your home country)
- Valid passport
International Driving Permit (IDP)
If your driver’s licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. IDPs must be obtained in your home country before travelling to Canada.
Deposits & Discretion
A security deposit isn’t required for most rentals. One applies when you pay by debit, when a driver is licensed outside Canada, or when no damage protection is in place: $300 for a sedan, $1,000 for an SUV, $2,500 for a full-size SUV or the 4Runner. Only one amount applies, and it sits separately from your rental total and the $50 booking deposit. It comes back in full provided the vehicle is returned in the condition it was received. The security amount is removed or reduced only on proof of outside coverage that applies to this rental — a personal policy, a card benefit, or ICBC RoadStar / a rental-vehicle policy — verified before pickup; without it the full amount applies. This applies to security required because no damage protection is in place; security required because you pay by debit or hold a licence from outside Canada is not removed or reduced by proof of coverage.
If a deposit applies to your booking, you’ll be told before or at pickup. It’s held on the card provided and released promptly after the return inspection; how soon it shows up again is up to your bank.
