BC Residents
ICBC Does Not Automatically Cover Rentals
Standard ICBC Autoplan insurance does not automatically extend to rental vehicles unless you have the RoadStar or RoadStar Plus add-on on your policy.
Recommended: ICBC Rental Insurance ($10/day)
BC residents with a valid BC driver’s licence can purchase rental vehicle insurance directly from ICBC for $10/day. We highly recommend this option as it provides comprehensive coverage at a very affordable rate.

Insurance FAQ
What happens if I damage the vehicle?
Report any damage immediately by calling us. With the Standard waiver you pay up to $2,500 for collision and up to $200 for comprehensive, per event; with the Enhanced waiver it is up to $1,000 and $0. Decline both and there is no cap. Windshield replacement is $300 under every option. We'll guide you through the claims process.
Is there a security deposit?
Most renters don’t pay a security deposit. One applies when you pay by debit, when a driver is licensed outside Canada, or when no damage protection is in place: $300 for a sedan, $1,000 for an SUV, $2,500 for a full-size SUV or the 4Runner. It is one amount, held separately from your rental total and from the $50 booking deposit, and it is released promptly once the car is back and checked over. The security amount is removed or reduced only on proof of outside coverage that applies to this rental — a personal policy, a card benefit, or ICBC RoadStar / a rental-vehicle policy — verified before pickup; without it the full amount applies. This applies to security required because no damage protection is in place; security required because you pay by debit or hold a licence from outside Canada is not removed or reduced by proof of coverage.
Are there age restrictions?
Drivers must be at least 21 on the pick-up date — the same rule for every vehicle in the fleet. One exception: 19–20 with ICBC coverage that extends to the rental, by arrangement — call us. We don’t rent to anyone under 19, and we never charge a young-driver fee.
Can I add additional drivers?
Yes — $30 for each additional driver, waived for immediate family. Every driver has to be listed on the agreement, meet the same licence and age requirements, and be present at pickup to sign.
Do I need insurance to rent?
Yes — damage to the car has to be covered one way or another. BC licence holders can buy ICBC rental insurance ($10/day), add our Standard ($9/day) or Enhanced ($13/day) damage waiver, or show proof of existing coverage through RoadStar/RoadStar Plus, a credit card benefit, or travel insurance. You can also decline our waiver and rely on your own cover — then the full security amount for that vehicle is held.
What if I already have coverage?
If you have RoadStar or RoadStar Plus on your ICBC policy, your coverage extends to rental vehicles. If you have credit card insurance or travel insurance that covers rental cars, bring proof of coverage. We still recommend the Enhanced damage waiver if you’d rather not carry the risk yourself.
What is RoadStar?
RoadStar and RoadStar Plus are optional add-ons to your ICBC Autoplan policy that extend your coverage to rental vehicles. Without one of these add-ons, your standard ICBC Autoplan does not cover rental cars. Contact your ICBC broker to check if you have this coverage.
What's NOT covered by insurance?
The waivers don’t cover: interior damage, lost keys or fobs ($1,100 each), wrong fuel, driving under the influence, unauthorized drivers, and off-road use. See our Terms & Conditions for complete details.
